Runners streak through successful season
by Marlen Garcia
Maine West boys and girls cross country teams, looking forward to the conference meet, made a large amount of progress this season. As Head Coach Chuck Lawyer stated, 'The team has improved steadily since the beginning of the season." He went on to say, "We have a reasonably young team, and the kids have had some success. I think they see tremendous success can be attained if the effort is put in during the summer months of practice."
The success and improvement was apparent as all levels of the cross country team placed respectably at a recent Maine South Invitational. The varsity girls' team took home a second place trophy while the varsity boys took fifth place. Sophomore boys took seventh place, junior varsity girls third, and the freshmen boys won a second place trophy.
At the St. Ignatius College Prep Invitational run at Grant Park in Chicago on Columbus Day, all levels came through once again, despite chilly weather.
Winning trophies were girls varsity with a second place, boys varsity with a third place, and the boys freshman had a first place victory. Rounding out the girls' varsity team are: Laura Kelly '89, Ann Schaecher '87, Debbie Dobbs '87, Josefa Schaecher '88, Kari Bath '89, Marlen Garcia '89, and Chris Medunycia '90. The boys' varsity team is made up of Mark Bradley '87, George Ganas '87, Eric Obenberger '87, Jason Stoneham '87, Du at Ngo '88, Mervyn Jonota '88, and Dan Mc Ardle '89.
Runners making a great amount of improvement are Stoneham, Jonota, McArdle, and Chris Gallagher '89.
The boys varsity hopes to win the conference race as well as qualify for the sectional race. "This is a reasonable and attainable goal if they work," Coach Lawyer noted.
The girls varsity hopes to dominate the conference race to ice a 6 win, and no loss record. Qualifying for state is a major goal the girls see within their reach. Ann Schaecher commented, "If we reach the full potential of our team and get our pack of runners as close as can be, we'll make it downstate."
