Volleyball finishes 5-3 in conference
by Tom Vaid
Our Maine West team wraps up this season with a current record of 9-13 overall and 5-3 in conference competition.
"We basically have a young team without much experience, but we gained experience as this year progressed,'' explained Coach Tipton. Co‑captains Joyce Fillipp '87 and Stephanie Pinske '88 have been able to lead the team to victories over Glenbrook South, Maine East. and Maine South.
"Deerfield and Glenbrook South are the toughest teams in our conference," said Coach Tipton. "Beating Glenbrook South was the highlight of conference play," stated Stephanie Pinske.
An easy two game victory over Maine South, ranked first in the region, increases Maine West's hopes of winning regionals. The team was at its best in a close loss to top ranked Libertyville, 19-17, 15‑12.
The upcoming Pumpkin Tournament hosted by Maine West is the most important tournament held, next to the state meet. Twelve of the top fifteen top teams in the state will compete at the tournament. The 24 teams competing will be divided into A, B, and C divisions of 8 teams each. Maine West achieved second place in the B division last year.
Coach Tipton asks Maine West students to "come out and support the team in regionals play."
