10 Receive National Merit Recognition

Named as semi‑finalists in the 1961‑62 National Merit Scholarship competition were Jim Collister, Lora Eckert, Steve Farmer, Char Gertz, Larry Lashway, Mary Anna Matteson, Joe Mitchell, John Saari, Dave Scully, and Craig Seitz.

These 10 are among approximately 10,000 seniors throughout the country who attained semi-finalist status through their high scores on the qualifying examination, a test of educational development given last March in more than 15,000 high schools

Each semi-finalist now moves a step closer to winning a four year Merit Scholarship to the college of his choice.

To increase their opportunities to obtain financial assistance if they need it, the Merit corporation sends the names of semi‑finalists to all accredited colleges and universities and to other scholarship‑granting agencies and financial aid sources. Studies show that about 50 per cent of the semifinalists obtain scholarship assistance from sources other than the Merit program.

The semi‑finalists will take another rigorous examination, the three‑hour Scholastic Aptitude test of the College Entrance Examination board, to be given in testing centers throughout the nation on December 2.

In the final phase of the competition, the high school grades, extracurricular activities, school citizenship, and leadership qualities of the students will be evaluated along with their scores on the tests.

About April 26, the names of the Merit scholars will be announced, the exact number depending on the extent of sponsor support of the program.

"We are very proud of these students," remarked Principal H. L. Rider. "The entire faculty and student body offer their congratulations, I am sure."
