Coach Olson's Gridmen Eye
Season's Second Victory

Maine West's Varsity Warriors go against Glenbard East's 1‑1 Interim conference record at home tonight, as they attempt to even up their own Interim league record. In the first two contests this year, the gridders split, shutting out Peoria, 7‑0, but then dropping a 12‑7 decision to Proviso West.

Beat Peoria

Showing a strong defense in their first outing of the season, the varsity topped Peoria for the second season in a row. The first half of the game was played with neither team gaining much yardage, although Maine threatened once or twice. The Warriors carried the ball down to the Peoria one‑yard line, only to have time run out on them as the half ended.

The second half began much like the first, even though West did gain much more yardage, and it appeared that the game might end in a scoreless deadlock. But mid‑way through the last quarter, West took command of the ball at the 50‑yard line, and in five plays, including a 23‑yard run by Leonardson, moved it to the Peoria 10. On the next play, Dave Larsen smashed across the goal‑line for the only score of the game. The extra point was added by Dan Humay, and the Warriors had their 7‑0 margin. Peoria was unable to get another drive going, and game ended with the ball deep in their own territory.

Second Half Fatal To West

Opening their Interim League season, the Warriors again showed strength in defense, but their offense fell short as Proviso West rallied for two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

On a drenched field the game started out in a stalemate, with neither team pushing across a score in the first quarter. In the second period, however, Dan Humay drove into the end zone for Maine's only touchdown of the game. Humay added the extra point, and at the end of the half the Warriors held a 7‑0 lead.

The rest was all Proviso West. They tallied in the third quarter, bringing their score within one point of Maine West, and in the last period scored on a spectacular 55‑yard pass play by Dugaw.
