West' Sports
By Larry 'n Bill
PROSPECT IS ONCE again shaping up as the team to beat in the Interim League this year. The Knights won their 14th straight football contest last week. Other teams to watch out for are East Leyden and Glenbrook.
FIVE NEW SCHOOLS have entered the Interim League this year, making a total of 12 members. Joining this fall are Glenbard East, Niles West, Morton West, Deerfield, and West Leyden. Some of these schools fielded teams in certain sports last year, but only on the sophomore or junior-varsity level.
TONIGHT'S CONTEST WITH Glenbard East will mark the first time the two schools have met in varsity competition. Halftime festivities will be highlighted by a special pagent presented by the boys' physical education department. The theme of the program is physical fitness and will point out the current emphasis Maine West is placing on "toughening-up." A review of various activities in which the boys participate during the year will be given. Narrator will be Mr. Paul McKinnis.
DURING THE HALF-TIME program of the Niles West game October 6, the girls' physical education department will give a similar demonstration. Activities such as archery, fencing, golf, and many others will be shown.
THE ANNUAL FALL intramural golf and tennis tournaments are well underway, and the class champions should be determined during the next two weeks. Current tennis tournament leaders in doubles are Bob French '65 and Tom Kock '65, Ron Van Scogoe '65 and Bruce Jacobsen '65, Brian McIntosh '65 and Claud Stewart '65, Cliff Vogel '64 and John Arkoos '64, John Heckel '64 and John Wintzell '64, and Pat Gassner '63 and Bruce Parsons '62.
Touch football began with the Senior class tournament September 27. The Junior tournament will start October 4.
Cross country championships will take place October 11 for freshman and sophomore boys, and October 13 for juniors and seniors.
The boy's intramural department is sponsoring free swimming every Monday during September and October. Body conditioning will take place in the weightlifting room every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during October.
Mr. Roy Kearns is assisting Mr. Miley Hotchkiss, intramural director, during the fall sports season. Mr. Dave Kennedy and Mr. Roy Matkovic will assist with the winter and spring sports, respectively.
SEASON TICKETS FOR all five Maine West 1961 home contests are new on sale in the school book store, A-102, for $6.25.
THE FROSH-SOPH Harriers are undefeated so far, having won their first two meets of the season. They beat Barrington, 26-31, and then snowed under West Leyden, 19-44.
