"Being on the winning mile relay team, which turned in the best time in the state last year at the Waukegan relays, was my biggest thrill while participating in sports," grinned Ray Leonardson, this week's Warrior of the West.
Ray has participated in three sports ‑ football, track, and wrestling ‑ throughout each of his four years at Maine. During the football season this Warrior scored 42 points which won him a berth on the All‑Interim league team. He was also West's most valuable player. During this year's wrestling campaign, Ray placed second in district, after being eliminated by the eventual state champion. Ray has had quite an exciting track career. While participating in the varsity conference meet his sophomore year, he won the broad jump, placed fourth in 100‑yard dash, and ran on the winning 880‑yard relay team. Last year as a junior, he placed third in both the 100 and 220‑yard dashes while also gaining a second place with the 880‑yard relay team. Already this year, he has placed fourth in both the broad jump and the 440‑yard dash, and run on the third place mile relay team.
Along with all this Ray is also Maine West's most lettered letterman ‑ with a total of seven. His favorite subject is a certain senior girl. He is not sure about what college he will attend, although he is looking into Western Illinois university.
