As the winter weather leaves and spring comes, the outdoor sports take over where the indoor ones leave off.
This is also true with Maine West's trackmen, who have moved from the black‑top, circular track inside to the cinder oval around the football field. But with the exception of a few of the dashes and field events, the sport remains the same.
The Warriors will host Evanston tonight after school in their first outdoor meet. The West cindermen are out to revenge the 50 1/2 to 49 1/2 defeat they suffered earlier from the Wildkits that broke their 32 dual-meet winning streak.
Maine's trackmen, who have taken the Interim league outdoor championship for the last two years, are looking forward to another good season. Seniors Vie Oakley, Lee Wolf, and Ray Leonardson will be counted on heavily by Coach Joe Jobst.

Lee Wolf, who has been conference champ in the quarter mile for the last two years, has switched to the half mile. He broke two minutes indoors this year when he placed second to last year's state champion in the conference meet. Vic Oakley, who placed fifth in the half mile at the conference meet last year, has switched to the quarter mile, and won that race in the conference meet this year. Ray Leonardson has done everything from broad jumping to the sprints and the quarter mile. He has placed six times in conference meets and been on three placing relay teams. Other returning lettermen are Bob Wagner, in the mile, and Earl White in the hurdles.
The mile relay should also be a strong event for the Warriors, as they have three of last year's runners back. Last year's team posted a time within two seconds of the state record.
The outdoor season lasts nearly two months, with the state district meet on May 12 and the Interim conference meet on May 26 being the two most important.
