Science Victors Go to State

Ten contestants from Maine West will be in Champaign, Illinois today competing for awards in the annual Illinois State Science fair. These entrants won first place in the District fair at Lake Forest college on April 28.

The district winners were Jack Dettner '63, John Erickson '63, Todd Gartner '62, Ed Liszka '62, Jim Moyer '62, Ken Pinzke '63, John Schafer '63, Gorden Scherer '65, John Toth '63, and Bob Treanor '63.

Todd Gartner, in addition to winning first place at the District fair with his experiment on "Near Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy", won a Westinghouse Science award. He did this by entering a project in the fair and being in the top 10 percent of the students taking a special Westinghouse placement exam.

A majority of the winning projects were worked on in B-107, the Science Seminar room. This room is set aside for individual student research. Nine of the first place winners at the District fair were from the seminar room. John Collister '63, John Frana '63, Tom Geisler '63, and Steve Priest '63, also from the seminar room, won second places at Lake Forest.

The 18 students presently doing research in the seminar room are there only by special recommendation of their science teacher and are usually chosen from an accelerated chemistry class.
