Tri‑S Visits Springfield

Visiting Lincoln's tomb will be one of the high points of the trip when 37 Maine West students travel to Springfield, Illinois today.

This third annual historical tour to Springfield and the reconstructed village of New Salem is being sponsored by the Tri‑S club. Mr. Erie Edstrom, social science teacher and sponsor of the club, will lead the tour. The student sightseers left the bus concourse at 7 a.m. this morning and will return at 11 p.m. tonight.

According to Mr. Edstrom, "As capital of Illinois and home of Abraham Lincoln, Springfield abounds in historical interest which brings many pages of American history to life." Among other places to be visited are the State legislature, the Lincolniana room in the Illinois Centennial building, the Hall of Illinois flags, and a museum.

"We hope that Governor Kerner will be in to greet us," jested Mr. Edstrom. Much of the afternoon will be spent at New Salem park, where Lincoln lived six of his formative years. "This will be a never‑to‑be‑forgotten visit," remarked Mr. Edstrom. Supper will be eaten in Strong's cafeteria in Springfield.
