West Cindermen To Strive For
District Championship

Tomorrow the Maine West trackmen will enter the Illinois State District meet held at Prospect High school. According to head coach Mr. Joe Jobst, "The team has an excellent chance of winning." Ray Leonardson, Vie Oakley, and Lee Wolf will be counted on heavily to do most of the scoring. In order to qualify for the state meet, held in Champaign on May 18 and 19, a runner has to run under a certain time, throw over a certain distance, or place first or second in his event.

On May 4, the thinclads participated in the Maine East relays. The team scored 13 points while finishing behind the field of seven other schools. The high hurdle shuttle relay placed fifth, with the team being composed of three sophomores, Bruce Congalton, Bob Tatge, and Earl White, and one senior Rick Grenke. The low hurdle shuttle team tied for fifth, and it was composed of Congalton, Grenke, Tom Morton, and White. The big surprise of the evening came from the mile relay team of Leonardson, Oakley, Chuck Weil, and Wolf, which turned in a 3:25.5, the best time in the state so far this year.

Eighth at Waukegan

In the Waukegan April 28, relays the Warriors took eighth' place out of 15 schools. The cindermen scored 16 points on second places in both the mile and the distance medley relays. Leonardson, Oakly, Weil, and Wolf ran the mile relay. Leroy Schlegal replaced Weil and ran with the other three in the distance medley relay.

On Tuesday, April 24, the Warriors won their first outdoor meet of the season by crushing the Niles West squad 89 2/3 28 1/3. The thinclads won 12 of the 14 events, took 8 seconds, and 8 thirds. In the high hurdles White took first, while Schlegel and Well placed first and third, respectively, in the 100‑yard dash.

In the half mile, the Warriors took a complete sweep with Wolf leading the pack. The discus also proved strong as the weightmen took a complete sweep with Rich Samlow throwing the farthest. Don Nixon led another sweep in the pole vault.

The last complete sweep was the 440‑yard dash. Leonardson placed first in the broad jump and third in the mile. Bob Wagner placed second in the mile, while Al Klehr finished third in the broad jump.

In the first outdoor meet of the season, the trackmen finished third in a triangular meet with Evanston and Glenbrook, both of these teams were the only teams to beat the Warriors. The Maine thinclads took five firsts, two seconds, four thirds and five fourths. The Glenbook Spartins took first with 57 points, while Evanston edged the Warriors by one point, 46‑45.
