Shoot for 3rd Interim Title
West Leyden will play host to the Warriors this Saturday, May 12. Willowbrook will travel to Maine West the following Wednesday, May 23. The diamondmen will then terminate their season in a double-header with Niles West Saturday, May 26.
In their first conference encounter, the Warriors split a double-header with Glenbrook. Chip Allen pitched the first game as the Westmen won 5-0. He gave up only three hits while striking out 10. Bob Lorentz, Dave Larsen, and Jim Dehlin shared mound chores in the second game as West was beaten 9-3. The diamondmen crushed Wheaton 11-2 as Allen posted his second victory against no defeats while allowing only three hits. Allen, Rick Warnicke, Don Seagren, Dan Humay, Al Waters, and Butch Bending all tallied for two hits to pace the Warriors.
Swamp Deerfield
The Westmen trounced their Deerfield foes April 21, b y scoring 27 runs to Deerfield's one. The first game saw Allen go the route while striking out 16 and allowing only 2 hits as Maine won 10-0. In the second contest West pushed across 17 runs to Deerfield's one run. Dave Larsen gave up only three hits as he struck out nine of his foes. Seagren and Humay sparked the
Warriors with six hits and five hits, respectively. Maine then traveled to Proviso West and whipped them 12-3 as Allen posted his fourth win against no defeats. Humay tallied for three hits with Seagren, Waters, and Allen banging out two hits apiece.
Allen pitched a one-hitter as Maine gathered first place for themselves in the Interim league by beating Morton West, last year's state champ, 5-0. Waters, Humay, and Bending collected two hits apiece. Dehlin then pitched a fine three hit performance the following day as the Westmen trounced East Leyden 7-0. Ray Boyd banged out two hits to pace the Warriors.
Maine West will play host to District competition for the state play offs starting May 14. Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest, and Maine West will compete for the honors. The winner will travel to North Chicago to compete in the regional and then go onto Rockford for the sectional. The state championships will be held June 7 and 8 in Peoria.
