The magic circle fell around 17 seniors this morning as department awards highlighted the annual senior awards assembly.
Students honored for their outstanding high school work in the departments were art: Gayle Bauman and Joyce McGarvey; business education: Edward Bushlus and Ellen Timmermann; home economics: Georgann Percival; industrial arts: Terry Pestel and Kenneth Webb: language: Betty Coffman and Marianne Manke; mathematics: Gary Schlieckert; music: Marcia Relph; boys' physical education: John Williams; girls physical education: Mary Spoo; science: Phillip Wankat; and social science: Larry Lashway. Pictures of the above students appear on page 8 of this paper.
Academic Honors Recognized
Also recognized were the Valedictorian, John Sarri, and Salutatorian, Gretchen Rider, academic leaders of the class of 1962. John was a merit scholar this year and recipient of several other outstanding awards. Gretchen was awarded the DAR honor for Maine West this year.
As is customary each year Good Will awards were given. Twelve received these honors. They were Joe Figard, Bruce Johns, Ray Leonardson, Marilyn Manny, Joyce McGarvey, Beverly Pawelko, Bob Petkus, Gretchen Rider, Gail Schellin, Craig Seitz, Barbara White, and John White. Students are usually nominated for the Good Will awards by the senior homeroom advisors.

The entire faculty then makes the final selection on the basis of excellence in scholarship, leader ship, and outstanding qualities of dependability, integrity, initiative, and creativity.
Other Awards
Sharon Fogelquist was awarded excellence in GAA, while the M‑club nominated Lee Wolf for excellency in athletics. Bruce Johns and Joanne Pracht were receivers of $250 scholarships each from the Mothers' club represented by Mrs. Ralph Riddell, president, and Mrs. C. P. Lorentz, chairman of the scholarship committee. These scholarships are awarded by application and selection.
The Washington Book award was given to Lois Wright '63, while Rick Geertz '63, was selected for the Harvard award. Kathleen Neumann was presented the Tri‑S scholarship.
The past year's Student Council president Bruce Johns and secretary Marilyn Manny made presentations to next year's president Tom Prochaska and secretary Pat Ritter.
The assembly opened with the singing of the National Anthem under the direction of Mr. Wilbur Schafer, vocal instructor. Mr. Herman Rider, principal, was assembly chairman with Barry Eisfeldt '63, taking over as student chairman.
Singing of the Pep song ended the 1962 senior awards assembly.
