Music, Science Awards Given

Four‑year awards presented by Mr. Robert O'Grady, Kiwanis representative, on Thursday evening, May 3, went to Rose Jensen, Joe Kissane, Marcia Relph, Gail Schellin, and Peggy Wells, all of the orchestra department.

In the vocal department award recipients were Ed Bach, James Boeck, John Korn, Tom Kuersten, Ray Leonardson, Arlene Preiss, Barbara Raleigh, Terry Rogivue, Mary Spoo, and Ruth Tosterud. Presentations were made by Mr. Jordon Minerva, Kiwanis.

For the band Mr. Thomas Dodson, Kiwanis, presented awards to Alan Barski, Ray Boyd, Kenneth Covey, Joyce Dittrich, Tim Doland, Tom Edman, Janet Edwards, Wayne Fricano, Diane Gireau, Patricia Jordan, James Kasprzyk, Mary Mallegg, Tim Olson, Wayne Pearson, Gretchen Rider, Greg Scheve, Craig Seitz, Peggy Seiffert, Connie Straub, Kathy Tate, Jack Whetstone, and Jack Willams.

New members initiated into Tri‑M were Ed Bach, Gail Benes, Arline Boyer, Sue Conn, Lorie Egelston, Betty Gano, Don Grundler, John Gunderson, Carl Jefferson, Barbara Jersey, Marianela Jones, Jim Kaspryzk, Tom Kuersten, Wayne Markworth, Bonnie Odden, Karen Rivard Marie Rozenboom, Bob Schapper, Gail Schellin, Jan Wandrey, Barbara White, Nancy Wille, Jill Williams, Donna Wolf, and Bob Young. Mr. A. M. Harley, the national president of Tri‑M, made the presentation of pins.

Officers of the Music Boosters for 1962-63 are Mr. and Mrs. I. McKay, president; Mr. John Means, vice-president; Mrs. E. Weidner, secretary; and Mrs. R. Larson, treasurer.

Science Awards

Maine West high school science students racked up an enviable record at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science fair, held at the University of Illinois, May 10, 11, and 12, when they won a total of 11 awards from among the 1200 entries submitted by high school students from all over the state.

John Schafer '63, and Todd Gartner '62, scored impressively when they won Outstanding awards. Schafer's award was the third consecutive Outstanding award he has won in the state finals. He also acquired a top award in the Future Scientist of America Regional competition.

First place awards were presented to Ed Liska '62, John Toth '63, and Gordon Scherer '65 for their entries.

Kenneth Pinzke '63, John Erickson '63, John Dettner '63, Robert Treanor '63, and Jim Moyer '62, won second place medals.

All the work on the science projects was carried out in the Maine West Science seminar with personnel from the Borg Warner Research center, Des Plaines, acting as individual advisors.
