Predict 9,000 Students In '70

Maine South and our new field house are on the agenda for voters on November 18. Total cost of the two projects is $8,827,000, which is figured to cost a homeowner $20 or more in taxes per year. In the long run the expense is not so great because more students will get a better education.

Maine South will be located on the southeast corner of Talcott and Dee roads in southwestern Park Ridge.

Des Plaines has an estimated population of 38,000; already 3,200 over the 1960 census and we're still growing with no end in sight. It's figured that by 1970 we will have 9,000 high school students in our area. We who have been here at Maine West for the last two years don't need statistics to tell us that it's getting crowded. It's getting monotonous for those who

have to run over to Maine East every time they want to see a football game, basketball game, or track meet. If we had a fieldhouse of our own, enthusiasm would rise for the games.

Maine East and Maine West are already twice the ideal size of a school, and it would be a serious psychological mistake to make any additions to either school. If we did make any additions to our school, opportunities for us to show leadership and talent and utilize facilities adequately would all be reduced.

The maximum capacity of a school is considered to be 85 per cent of classroom use. This is because a physics lab cannot be successfully converted to a sewing class or an auto shop into a history class. Maine East is operating at 88 per cent capacity and we are operating at 80 per cent.
