Homecoming is the time when everybody neglects his studies and stays out late so that a float will materialize for his club or class.
These devoted students work their fingers to the bone sticking tissues between chicken wire on the float. The weather takes its toll when many get stiff hands, broken fingernails, and chilled bones in the freezing air. Just when the float is near completion, someone finds out that the wrong colors were used or the sign is made upside down. So it has to be started all over.

Besides the physical pain suffered by those building the floats, there is the mental anguish of having parents and teachers mad at them. Parents complain that sleep is lost because of the late hours working. Teachers yell because lessons aren't learned. Troubles are multiplied by the girl or boy friend who complains of being neglected.
But finally that great day arrives ‑the day of the football game when the precious floats will be shown. Just before the game, wouldn't you know it, rain pours down and the floats are drenched. By this time one would think that the students would never want to build another float.
Next year all will be forgotten. Enthusiasm will soar and all will be out working on another float for Homecoming.
