Merit scholarship semi‑finalist Char "Charlie" Gertz '62, announces proudly that her prize possessions are her green eyes. This 5 foot 7 inch blond is by her own admission a "bookworm." Char was selected the first in a series of interviews to be held with merit semi‑finalists.
Asked what kind of food met her fancy, she good humouredly replied, "As you can tell by looking at me, I like almost everything, but especially milk, tomatoes, and salads."
Char's hobbies are limited since she does homework 'whenever I get the chance." What time she has left is devoted to

writing. Poetry is her main topic, but she writes other types of literature, too. Last year she had an essay caller "The Virtues of Adversity "published by the Chicago Sunday Tribune's "Voice of Youth" column.
Her high opinion of Maine West comes from her respect for the faculty and administration. "It's the greatest," exclaims Char. "It gives a student the opportunity to learn more and go beyond the regular classroom assignment."
As for the future, Char plans to attend Lawrence college in Appleton, Wisconsin, and then teach junior or senior English literature.
