Coach Olson Expresses Views On
Maine West Fieidhouse

Will our school ever get a fieldhouse? This is the question that goes through many students' minds as they go to a Maine West home football or basketball game at Maine East.

This will be decided on November 8, when the voters go to the polls.

In an interview Coach Kenneth Olson, chairman of the boys' physical education department, said, "It is in the ordinance of the bond issue that if the majority of the people vote for a new Maine South, then Maine West will automatically get a fieldhouse."

"Maine West needs a field house for four main reasons, emphasized Mr. Olson. "First, we need it for additional physical education facilities; second, for a spectator gym; third, it is difficult for us to use the Maine East fieldhouse; and fourth, we need a place for commencements and all‑school assemblies."

When asked about the facilities the fieldhouse would have if Maine West got it, Mr. Olson replied, "It would have three physical education stations, two gyms, a balcony with a capacity of 3,565, a lobby, trophy cases, refreshment stands, two large locker rooms for physical education and visiting teams, a coaches' locker room and office facilities, storage space, and enough room on the floor to play six volley ball games or 10 badminton games. In the balcony there would be a 30 by 80 foot area, which would be used for various activities like wrestling and gymnastics.

"If we get the fieldhouse, it would be situated between D wing and the swimming pool. adjacent to the East parking lot.

"Maine West needs a fieldhouse. Without one it is not a complete school," added Mr. Olson, "and the best way for the students of Maine West to help get the fieldhouse is to get their mothers and fathers to vote in favor of the bond issue November 18."
