What is communism? Maine West and Maine East seniors should be able to answer this question a little better after they take the two‑week course on communism being introduced through government classes this month.
Mr. Glen Hoffman is the chairman of the group which has assembled an outline for government teachers to follow.
The outline has eight basic points. They are, Society in the Communist State Today; Historical Background of the Communist Movement; The Planned Economy, Past and Present; Communist Imperialism; Political Structure, Government, and Party; Semantics of Communism; Internal Challenge; and Alternative Courses of Action.

The first section deals with everyday life in Russia as opposed to ours and includes such things as the Communist religion, the rewriting of history to suit the present party government, and the making of scientific truth to conform with the party theory.
The second through the fourth sections attempt to answer the question of how the communists were able to subjugate the masses.
The fifth through seventh sections bring the group to date and identify some of the problems facing us today.
Section eight deals with the future and what we must do to fight communism.
Books, vocabulary, movies, suggested activities, and community resources will all be introduced as the teacher sees fit to give greater understanding of the course.
