Brotherhood award winner Joe "Shadow" Figard, is a 6 foot, 142 pound, blond, blue‑eyed senior, who was born on January 3, 1944, in Fairbury, Illinois.
As chairman of the Citizenship and Sportsmanship committee in Student Council this year, Joe will have many things to do, among them supervising the honor study halls and the student lounge. Other extracurricular activities which keep him busy are cross country, Park district basketball and tennis, and occasional hunting. Joe lettered in tennis his sophomore year and last year was voted the most valuable player on the tennis squad.
Tentative future plans for this "M" club boy include majoring in education at Bradley university in Peoria. He then plans to teach science or history in high school. On the subject of schoolwork, Joe feels that "you get out only as much as you put in." He wishes he could be more ambitious in getting his homework done.
For the improvement of Maine West Joe suggested, "Students should have a more respectful attitude toward school property and the school itself. Also, students from different suburbs attending Maine West should try to be more friendly toward each other."
Joe seems also to have a mischievous streak as is shown by an episode last summer. He and Butch Bending, who was supposed to be a foreign exchange student that couldn't speak English, went separately into a restaurant at Power's lake. Joe, seeing that this "foreigner" couldn't get anything across to the confused waitress, joined him to give some assistance. He finally straightened things out for her by translating Butch's strange language, (which was really only double talk). "Boy, was that fun," remembered Joe.

It's just as important to a girl to be named Homecoming queen as it is to a boy to receive his letter or be chosen captain of the varsity squad.
Pretty blond‑haired, green-eyed Nicki Rappaport was chosen this year's Homecoming queen. In her sophomore year she was given the honor to represent her class at the Christmas formal. When not biting her nails, she is writing letters to some unknown fellow who is attending Bradley college, or saying "scebbie schebbie." She belongs to Brotherhood society, rep club, and is an active member of Senior leaders.
When asked what her pet peeves were, she named boys who gossip at the head of the list. Art and English seem to be her favorite subjects. When asked how she felt about being named Homecoming queen, Nicki exclaimed, "It was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me. I kept saying to myself that it couldn't be happening to me. It just didn't seem real."
She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Learning to get along with other people, she thinks, is the most important thing she has learned at Maine West. "Knowing that you're not superior to another person is a good trait to learn. It should be practiced by everyone," says Nicki.
With her reign as Homecoming queen ended, she wishes to thank every student in Maine West for giving her this honor.
