Warrior of the West

"It's really great to attend a fine school like Maine West." These are the words of Mike Canar, '62. Mike, a brown‑haired, blue‑eyed senior, is one of the leaders and outstanding runners of Coach Bill Barringer's varsity cross country team.

"Due to fine coaching and hard work, our team has experienced a successful season," remarked Mike of this year's harriers.

Mike himself has had quite a season. In the state district meet he was the first runner from Maine West to cross the finish line, and in the Interim conference meet on October 20, Mike finished twenty‑first out of 84 contestants.

Aside from cross country, he also participates in track. He earned his numerals in both sports his sophomore year. Last year in cross country, and while running the half mile in track, Mike received his letter. However, athletics haven't hampered his scholastic efforts, as he has maintained a good grade average.

Turkey is number one to Mike in the food category. His other interests include science‑fiction movies and books, popular music, and chemistry. Mike has his own chemistry lab in his basement.

The big moment in his life thus far (other than being born) according to Mike was being on this year's championship cross country team.

As for the future, Mike forecasts, "I definitely plan to attend college, but right now I am not sure which one."
