"Mere effort and working up to capacity are the most important things I expect from my students," remarked Miss Lois Kapel, government and history teacher, who does not expect all of her students to be "A" students.
Born in Fargo, North Dakota, Miss Kapel came to Maine West last year as a student teacher from Northwestern university. At Northwestern she started as a journalism major and after a few changes, decided she belonged in government and history.
Working part of her way through college, Miss Kapel had time only for her greatest interest, music. She is particularly interested in the piano, although she enjoys just plain listening, too.
Because she enjoys government as well as history, Miss Kapel spends her summers as a legal secretary for a Chicago firm.
When asked what she felt was most important in studying government or history she replied, "In order for one to remember the details necessary to learn in government, and history too, I feel outlining is very important. Of course, it takes time, but this makes studying easier in the long run." Miss Kapel doesn't feel that everything can be understood just by listening to a lecture during class, but that the student should know the subject before class and the lecture will serve as added explanation.

Returning to Maine West after a one year absence, Mr. David Gauger, physics and algebra instructor, praised the improvements made in the physics department, especially the new lab equipment and the changeover to PSSC physics.
Mr. Gauger attended the University of Pennsylvania and Temple university in Philadelphia last year to obtain his masters degree.
Born in Wheaton, Illinois, Mr. Gauger received a four year tuition scholarship to Northern Illinois university. He also attended the University of Illinois. Playing the trumpet in a small band helped pay for part of his college education.
Operating a "ham" radio and playing the organ are among Mr. Gauger's many interests. He, his wife, and their four sons reside in Rolling Meadows.
Mr. Gauger expects his students "to be good, clean kids and to work hard and do their best."
