Warrior of the West

Rough, tough, mean, violent, and merciless‑this is how Rich Samlow '62 appeared to the opponents of West's varsity football team. To his friends, however, "Big Sam" (6'3", 220 lbs.) is a quiet, likeable, mild-mannered, "average" American boy.

A letterman in football last year, Rich returned this year as an outstanding defensive player. He was the mainstay, of the Warrior's strong defensive forward wall. Besides aiding the football team, Rich donates his services to the track team each spring. He received his letter by throwing the shotput and discus.

Athletics alone do not compile Rich's list of hobbies and interests. Besides being a hunter and archer, he is a part‑time cowboy! Rich finds much enjoyment by riding in rodeos. Rich is also an animal lover, and he raises them as a hobby. His menagerie includes 225 pigeons, dogs, cats, rabbits, gold fish, and at one time an alligator.

Rich relates that being initiated into M‑club and defeating Prospect in football were two of his most rewarding experiences. He also admits that he has a constant craving for pizza. Study hall teachers seem, to disturb Rich to a small degree. College will be his destination after graduation from Maine West, although he hasn't definitely decided which one. Rich plans to continue his football efforts and study physical education.
