What Does Christmas Mean? |
Mr. Webster defines Christmas simply as being "the yearly celebration, on December 25, of the birth of Jesus Christ." This can be considered 100 per cent correct, but there is also more to the meaning of Christmas. It is the sound of happy children's voices, the hustle and bustle of people, the Merry Christmas spirit, and the sight of freshly fallen snow upon the ground. |
A good definition of Christmas is the family trimming the tree, the wreath upon the door, and the train beneath the tree, the stocking hung by the fireplace, and that wonderful feeling of togetherness. The last minute Christmas shopping for Mom, Dad, or sister Carole, and the fun you have trying to keep the gifts a secret after they've been bought. The suspense of what you're getting for Christmas, and the happy hours spent trying to bribe it out of someone. Then at last comes the night before Christmas as you sit around restlessly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. You look up and out the window into the sky as dark and as smooth as velvet, and watch the stars twinkling on and off, and the snow falling from the heavens just as light as a feather. This, along with Mr. Webster's excellent definition, is the true meaning of Christmas. |
