Wrestlers Ease Past Willowbrook

Morton West will be the foe tonight, as Maine West's varsity grapplers try to improve on a 3‑3 season record. After hosting the Falcons, the matmen travel to Proviso West to take on the Panthers.

Leading the wrestlers after six meets is Bob Jonas, with four wins and no losses. Dan Hansen and Pedro Martinez each have records of five victories and one defeat.

Three pins provided the difference last week, as the Warriors breezed to a 29‑14 win over Willowbrook. Dick Jensen, leading off in the 95 pound spot, was blanked 0‑4. Tom Lenhart was edged in his match, 2‑4, but then Bob Jonas pinned his foe, bringing West within one point. By whitewashing his Willowbrook counterpart, 5‑0, Dan Hansen gave Maine the lead. Pedro Martinez, wrestling at 127, triumphed 7‑2 and Bill Kribble gained a 2‑2 tie.

Gary Mitchell was beaten at 138. Irv Geisler emerged with a narrow 3‑2 victory. Ray Leonardson got the second of West's pins to put the Warriors ahead 21‑11. Keith Zolla lost a close one, 1‑3, but then Jan Anderson at 180 clinched the meet for Maine with a 7‑1 triumph. Bob Petkus put the finishing touches on by pinning his foe.

The Westmen got the season off to a good start last month, by beating Barrington 21‑15. The meet was not decided until the' last match, when Bob Petkus pinned his opponent.

Coach Dick Carlini's squad ran into trouble in their next meet, when they were up‑ended by Evanston's Wildkits, 34‑10. The score was closer in their first conference meet against West Leyden, but the final result was the same. Leading at one time 16‑2, West went on to lose 25‑20 in a close meet that was not decided until the last match.

Wheaton's Tigers sent Maine home with another defeat the following week, by a score of' 20‑17, another meet which was decided by the margin of one match. The matmen bounced back the following evening, though, as they topped the Rams of Glenbard East 27‑14.

The team will have only one more pre‑Christmas meet, an away contest at Glenbrook next thursday.
