Physical Fitness Program Challenges
PE Gym Classes

Starting last September, the boys of Maine West underwent a series of physical fitness tests, consisting of various track, field, and calisthenics activities. The program is based on a four‑year period in order to show students' physical improvements.

Each boy is tested once a semester. At the end of the testing period, the boys total up the points they have accumulated.

Results of the first testing period have been released by Coach Kenneth Olson, chairman of the boys' physical education department. Senior John Montanaro with 486 points was high man. Don Behrens totaled 17 pull‑ups; Sal Defalco, 84 pushups; Tony Currie was first with a five‑minute mile. Junior Arvin Zelinger rolled up 500 points. Jim Turner was high in pull‑ups with 21; Larry McKone, 81 push‑ups; Ton Matyja, a 5:03 mile.

For the sophomores Bruce Congalten and Paul Neuman tied with 479 points. Don Clark had 19 pull‑ups for high; James Keller, 60 push‑ups; Ron Fritz, 5:09 mile. In the freshman group Mike Hurjick totaled 467 points. John Martoccio took 17 chins; Philip Nelson, 60 pushups; Jim Chihowski and Kent Lashway each had a 5:16 mile.

Second and third highest times among the seniors were Jim Thorsen, 484, and Bob Engel, 483. Perrin Scott placed with 17 pull‑ups followed by Tony Currie with 16. Wayne Fricano and Bill Downing had 65 and 60 push‑ups, respectively. In the mile Richard McGough was timed in 5:20 and Ron Zillman in 5:23. Juniors placing second and third were Joe McClure, 498 and B ill Lopez, 484. In pull‑ups Richard Beier and Bill Kautter tied with 18; Pat Gassner was second with 57 push‑ups and Joe McClure third with 56. John Schafer ran a 5:29 mile wit h Larry McKone following close at 5:30.

Second and third places for the sophomores went to Jerry Bishop and Charles Goberecht, both tied at 472. Allen Miller with 17 pull‑ups, and Tony Bashmura and Barry Eisfeldt, 16 each, led in this event. With 51 push‑ups, Tim Zijewski was second, while 50 were good enough for third for Joe Panegasser. Ray Mulcany turned in a 5:21 mile and Tim Zijewski, 5:40.

Show places in the frosh were John Martoccio, 461 points, and Larry Attore, 456. Bob Gee, Dale Alles, John Towler, and Ray Wittboldt all tied with 14 pullups. John Towler had 45 pushups with Dennis Dempsey, Tom Johnstone, and Tom Mayer all Accomplishing 40. Richard Brawn was third in the mile with 5:35.
