"Can you bake a cherry pie?" Janice Long '62, can. Her cherry pie was recently selected as the winner among Maine West's entries. Janice will now go on to compete in the semi-finals of the Northern Illinois Gas company Cherry Pie contest.
Using their favorite recipes, students in Mrs. Judith Hardy's advanced foods classes baked cherry pies for competition. At the preliminary judging Janice '62, Joyce Christiansen '63, Carol Bongiorno '64, Angela Ratliff '63, and Kathy Warnicke '64, were chosen as finalists.
A panel of judges composed of Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal; Mrs. Gloria Saul, cafeteria manager; Mr. Verne Moeller, science teacher; and Mrs. Mary Kraska and Mrs. Lucille Stiles of the Home Economics staff scored the pies. The pie baked by Janice was judged best on the basis of its general appearance, crust, filling, and flavor.
Semi-finals of the Northern division will be held February 3, at which time a winner and a runner-up will be announced.
Janice, the "baker" who will represent Maine West in the final bake-off, plans to make home economics her career. Her post-high school agenda includes enrollment at Southern.
