Mermen Host Eight Tuesday

West's mermen, holding a 4‑1 conference record and 8‑4 overall, will host Elgin next Tuesday after school. This is a non‑conference meet.

The tankers dropped two of their meets in losing the final event, the relays. This occurred in the Glenbrook meet when four‑tenths of a second cost them a victory and possibly the conference championship. Losing the last relay at Riverside by 1.1 seconds cost them the other possible win. The mermen are currently in second place behind the undefeated GB squad.

One of the most exciting meets ever held in the Maine West pool was the Glenbrook event with the two teams battling all the way to the last event which decided the standings. Two West speedsmen turned in sparkling performances. Pat Gassner '63, set a new school and pool mark in the 100‑yard freestyle, while Al Koch '62, broke the school and pool record in the 100‑yard butterfly. Koch swam the 100 yards in the remarkable time of :58.9 seconds, breaking the record set by Phil Wankat '62, in the previous meet.

Coming up with three first places in last Saturday's meet at Riverside‑Brookfield were Jimo Kuhrt '64, 100‑yard breaststroke; Koch, 100‑yard butterfly; and the free style relay team. Second place honors went to Bruce Parsons '62, 100‑yard free style; Gassner, 200‑yard free style; Wankat, 100‑butterfly; John Gunderson '64, 100‑yard backstroke; John Montonaro '62, 100‑yard breaststroke; Art Behn '63, 200‑yard individual medley; and Jim Burgett '63, diving.
