Mermen Invade Conference Meet
Maine West's tank squad will travel to Morton West this Saturday where they will participate in the conference meet. The mermen, with a 4-2 Interim mark, as of last week have a strong chance of coming out on top.
In their recent meet with East Leyden, the mermen dunked the Eagles by the score of 52-43. The meet was decided in the last event, the 200-yard free-style relay. The free-style relay team, composed of Art Behn, Bill Eley, Bruce Parsons and Pat Gassner came through by beating the visitors.
Al Koch broke his own school and pool record in this meet with the time of 58.8 in the 100-yard butterfly. Koch also took first in the individual medley. Art Behn set a new school record in the 400-yard free-style,
while Pat Gassner tied his own mark in the 100-yard free-style. The tankers also took two other firsts in the meet, with Jimo Kuhrt grabbing top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, and John Gunderson copping a first in the 100-yard backstroke.
Second place honors were taken by Bill Eley, 50-yard free-style; Bruce Parsons, 100-yard free-style; Phil Wankat, 100-yard butterfly; and Bill Schacht, 200-yard free-style.
Coach Baer's squad had a season mark of 11 wins and five defeats before last week end's meet.
The frosh-soph swim team has also been doing very well this season. Thus far they have compiled a 14-3 record. Most frequent winners for the frosh-soph have been Jim Hyerdahl, Tom Jacobs, Dick Heller, Jim Henry, Rick Fulle, and Rich Schultz.
