VOL. III, NO. 7
FEBRUARY 14, 1962

Changes in the state basketball tournament setup this year have placed Maine West at Prospect for the regional on March 5. Opponents include Glenbrook, Deerfield, Notre Dame of Niles, Maryville Academy, Prospect, Arlington, and Maine East. Although almost any of these teams, with the possible exception of Deerfield, may be expected to put up a good battle, Arlington and Maine West look right now like the teams to beat.

The Warriors will begin their competition against Maryville. Other first‑round pairings pit Deerfield against Arlington, Maine East versus Notre Dame, and Prospect against Glenbrook.

Intramural basketball is still going strong. With most of the season completed, Figard's team heads the senior bracket, while Trick's squad has already clinched the junior championship. On the sophomore level Blenner's and Mamola's teams are battling for first place honors, and in the freshman division Han's quintet is leading the pack.

The annual wrestling tournament is slated for February 26, 27, and 28. Any boy who has not participated in interscholastic wrestling is eligible. Freshman and sophomores will be competing together, while upperclassmen will be paired according to their weight classifications.

Tonight's the night for the biggest basketball game of the season, as the M‑Club tangles with the faculty in their annual scrimmage. The faculty squad will include Marv "Knuckles" Nyren, "Big Ben" Bencriscutto, Wally "High Hat" Hommerding, and "Logarithm" Ladd. Five cheerleaders will root the emmers to victory. "Bouncy" Janssens, "Canoe" Downing, "Ruby" Klehr, "Stilts" Burmeister, and "45" Allen will be the young lovelies on hand for M‑Club. Halftime entertainment will be provided by a wrestling match between the faculty's "Masked Marvel" and a member of M-Club.

Maine West's JV basketball team goes against Niles West next, as they meet the Indians next Friday at 7 p.m. Recent JV games ended in a weekend split. Playing without 6'8" center Joe Wehlacz, the Warriors lost to East Leyden 45‑42 but came back the next night to beat Deerfield 65‑30.

Leading scorer in both contests was Dave Aegerter with 18 points against Leyden and 16 against Deerfield. Mike Schleicher was next against Deerfield with 15. The split gave the team an 8‑4 conference mark.

West sophomores added another two wins to their record by downing Deerfield 41‑22. The wins gave the sophs an overall total of 9‑6.
