Top 2 Debate To Be April 7

At long last the grueling debate season is drawing to a close. The last session of this year is going to be another television debate with the two top varsity debaters, Craig Seitz '62, and Joe Waters '62, on the affirmative side of the question "Should the federal government give grants‑in‑aid to presidential campaigns?" The negative opponents will be from Aurora East and the show "Rebuttal" will start at 2 p.m. on channel 2, Saturday, April 7.

This television debate will be the second this year in which Maine West has participated. In the first, which was a preliminary competition, Maine West was given the decision unanimously for the negative side of the question, "Should the federal government extend the minimum‑wage law coverage?" If Maine wins this coming debate, the squad will be eligible for the television championship debates.

The West Debate squad has been in existence for only three years, yet it is a member of two debate leagues and has participated in about 12 weekend debate tournaments during the course of this last season. Several of these tournaments have been held at such places as Northern Illinois university, and Northwestern. Maine has personally hosted after‑school debates with Morton East and St. George.

Debate coaches Mr. Eric Edstrom, history teacher, and Miss Harriet Johnson, English instructor, both point out the need for more boys on the squad.
