Koch Trains For State

The 1962 District Swim meet was held at Maine West last weekend, with one Warrior qualifying for the state meet.

Maine gained the finals in five events in the districts, but only Al Koch was able to qualify for state. He took third in the 100‑yard butterfly. Phil Wankat, who also swims the butterfly, missed qualifying for the state meet by a mere onetenth of a second. The Warriors finished fifth of the 13 competing teams in the meet, which was won by the powerful Evanston team.

In the conference meet held at Morton West the preceding Saturday, the Warriors finished third, behind Proviso West and Glenbrook. The mermen captured only one first in the meet, but took many otherplaces. Al Koch won the 100-yard butterfly with Phil Wankat securing second. Koch now holds the conference record in this event with the time of 59.5 seconds.

Art Behn took a third in the 400‑yard free style and Jimo Kuhrt placed third in the 100‑yard breast‑stroke. Pat Gassner took a fourth in the 100‑yard free style and Bill Schacht and Art Behn finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200‑yard free style. Per Lundgren took a sixth in the diving and Al Koch also took a sixth in t h e 200‑yard individual medley. The Warrior 200‑yard free style relay team, composed of Tom Johns, Bill Schacht, Bill Eley and Pat Gassner, took a second, while the 200‑yard medley relay team, made up of John Gunderson, Jimo Kuhrt, Phil Wankat, and Bill Eley, placed fourth.

Except for Koch, who swims this weekend at Evanston, the swimmers are finished for the season. Coach Baer's mermen ended the year with an excellent record of 12.5.
