Al "Rodent" Koch, this week's Warrior of the West, holds the school and pool record in the 100 yard butterfly, and last week qualified for the State meet by placing third in the district finals.
Al started working toward this distinguished feat four years ago when he first came out for the swimming team. In his sophomore year he earned his numerals and, as a junior, lettered.
Asked his views on the swimming team, Al remarked, "As usual, like all the teams a t Maine West, the swimming team has made a fine showing for a three‑year old school, each year growing stronger." Then he prophesied, "With all the talent coming up, next year's team will undoubtedly do better." He would not, however, disclose the secret meaning of the "UGLY" buttons which have lately been seen on various members of the squad.
High on his list of favorite foods are shrimp and other seafoods, while water skiing is the top activity aside from swimming. One of Al's pet peeves is the "outsiders" who make up stories about a group of seniors with "furry" nicknames.
Following graduation, this 5 foot 8 inch blond with blue eyes is planning to enter Michigan State, Southern Illinois, or Wabash college.
