Teacher Tells Of Trip

Among the most exciting events in the life of Miss Martha Peterson, P. E. teacher and sponsor of Dance club and Cheerleaders, are her traveling experiences. She has made two trips to Europe. On her first visit, she and three girl friends planned a tour by themselves ‑ Great Britian, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, the French Riviara, Paris, and Switzerland were all included in this tour.

In Denmark, Miss Peterson has close relatives whom she visited two years ago. While she was there, she accompanied them on an automobile trip to Norway and Sweden.

On being asked for a comparison of European countries and the United States, Miss Peterson replied, "This is very difficult to do since each is so completely different. Education is almost impossible to compare, for in Europe, education is not on such a national basis as it is in the United States.

Only the more intelligent European children go past six or eight years of schooling. The less intelligent ones either go to work or to a vocational school."

Miss Peterson revealed that many of the European countries have been "Americanized," that is, adapted to fit the needs of Americans visiting there. The Scandinavian countries and Austria have kept some of their old customs, however," she added.

Miss Peterson received her bachelors degree at Wheaton college, Wheaton, Illinois, and her masters degree in motivation at Trinity college in Hartford, Connecticut. She also attended the University of Colorado for two summers.

She has taught in Connecticut, Wisconsin, and now here at Maine West. Her teaching assignments also include night school on Wednesday evenings.
