VOL. III, NO. 9
MARCH 16, 1962

MAINE WEST'S FROSH basketball team was the only cage squad to capture a conference championship this year. A 55‑34 victory over Glenbrook gave the frosh an Interim record of 13‑1. Leading scorers for the team were Tom Hendrickson, Stony Jackson, Bill Verber, and Ted Walters.

THE SOPHOMORES, meanwhile, managed to end the season above the .500 mark, as they notched a 67‑59 triumph over GB. With a season total of 9‑8, the sophs took fourth place in the Interim. Leaders for the squad were Volker Engel, Les Jannusch, and Dick Lunsford.

ALSO ENDING THEIR season successfully were the JV's by overcoming GB, 55‑46. Hurt this year by illness (Joe Wehlacz) and call‑ups to the varsity (Dave Aegerter), Coach Zuccarini's squad still managed to complete the season with a 9‑7 conference record. Besides the two above mentioned, other leaders included Gary Wilson, Ed Schwenke, and Jim Dehlin.

VARSITY CAGE standout Al Waters has been selected to the second team of Interim all-stars. The first team was composed of such players as Morton West's Jim Vopicka, Prospect's Tom Thomas, Wheaton's Jack Hutchinson, Morton's Frank Tully, and GB's Denny Pietrzak. Besides Waters, the second team included Bill Borneman (Willowbrook), Ken Lock (Wheaton), Ray Perlberg (EL), and Jim Hart (NW). Warrior Rick Warnicke received honorable mention.

AL KOCH '62, the only Maine West swimmer to qualify for the state meet, finished the season in grand fashion by taking sixth in the 100‑yard butterfly.

THE JV'S PLAYED the last half of their season without 6 foot 8 inch center Joe Wehlacz. Joe is in the hospital with an ulcer. Joe would appreciate hearing from his classmates. See Mr. Freeman for details.

THE WARRIORS' BATTING cage has been working overtime as Coach Al Carstens, who isn't waiting for spring, sharpens up the eyes of his varsity players. The team, with eight returning lettermen, is eyeing another championship.
