Tom Starred In Film

Mainites have a "movie star" in their midst who is none other than Student Council president, Tom Prochaska.

This summer Tom was cast in the leading role of a Cornet educational film based on practicing good study habits. Class room and library scenes were filmed here at Maine West with the "classes" consisting of five junior girls and Mr. Garth Boyer, speech teacher, who portrayed Tom's teacher.

During the summer he represented Maine West as a delegate to the Convention of the National Association of Student councils in scenic Estes Park, Colorado. At Camp Chely, Tom acquired many new ideas and learned of international "relations projects" for our council.

Tom does not believe that Student Council should exist to serve itself, but to serve the student body and the school. Tom encourages students to discuss various issues in homeroom so representatives can present these opinions before the council assembly. He also believes the Westerner is an important media of exchange between the student body and the Student Council.

Tom particularly approves of the foster child program and hopes that Maine West can "adopt" more children in the future. He is keenly interested in the Memory Record project and feels that it serves the interest of the student body. By continuing such projects and initiating others, Tom wishes to enlist the support of the students through gaining their interest and confidence.

Despite official duties and responsibilities, Tom finds enough time to actively participate in outdoor sports. He recently began hunting, which ties in with his enjoyment of camping. However, his number one pastime is the art of fishing. An ideal vacation for Tom would also provide opportunities for water skiing. Active in school sports, Tom marks his fourth year in track. He became a varsity runner last year.

Tom favors art above other studies. Now enrolled in his fourth year of art at Maine West, he plans to study fine arts and painting after graduation. He will major in art education with the possibility of becoming an art teacher.
