"The newspaper is an institution developed by modern civilization to present the news of the day, to foster commerce and industry, to inform and lead public opinion, and to furnish that check upon government which no constitution has ever been able to provide."
The Tribune Credo The Chicago Sunday Tribune
A high‑school newspaper cannot do all the aforementioned things, but it does try to present school news, worthy doings of students, and entertainment in an interesting and laudable fashion. The school newspaper also tries to foster school spirit by working as a medium between the teachers, students, and parents.
The Westerner is not just a bulletin board on which news items, dance ticket advertisements, and football games are to be tacked; it is a student publication whose job it is to inform the student body on matters of general interest and importance. Stories for The Westerner are chosen on the basis of their timeliness, significance, interest, and the availability.
Since The Westerner is a school paper and is financed entirely by school funds, it has a moral obligation to abide by the policies advocated by the administration.

To help The Westerner fulfill all the ideals which it has set as its goals, The Westerner needs the combined help of the entire student body, faculty, and administration.
If any significant information should come into your possession, or should you have a suggestion to offer, please deliver it to room A‑ill, or drop it into the box marked The Westerner which is by the Adult Education center across from the cafeteria near the main door.
We hope that through the combined efforts of the student body, the faculty, and The Westerner staff, this year's Westerner, as in previous years, may be a paper to be applauded and admired.
The Westerner's platform for Maine West:
1. Strengthen the Student Council with more student interest.
2. Promote school spirit.
3. Erect a fieldhouse.
4. Sponsor a foreign exchange student.
5. Inspire high academic achievement.
6. Foster participation in clubs and sports and other organizations.
7. Arouse respect of all for one another.
