MAINE WEST'S JV FOOTBALL squad avenged last year's 13‑7 defeat by edging out Waukegan 6‑0 last Friday night. On the first play a pass was intercepted by a Warrior lineman. After moving the ball to the four‑yard line, fullback John Frana wedged the ball over for the lone touchdown. A try to run the extra point failed.
THE SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL team trounced visiting Schurz last Friday after school, 30‑0. Fullback Charlie Curren scored on an 80‑yard run and once again on a four‑yard scamper. Tailback Jerry Hanselman also scored on a 80‑yarder and threw a 30‑yard pass to Chuck Peterson. Mike Kuzich added a 27‑yard run for his touchdown and Tom Smith kicked three extra points.
WITH OVER 70 members of last year's Interim League Champion freshman squad, Coach Ed Atkinson is looking forward to a good year. Maine West freshmen gridders defeated Forest View 9‑0 last Saturday morning. After a scoreless first quarter, Steve Ryden broke around right end and ran 42 yards for the only touchdown with Carl Martin running the extra point. A touchback in the fourth quarter gave West their other two points.
MAINE WEST'S FROSH‑SOPH cross country team shutout East Leyden and Niles East in a triangular meet held at Bunker Hill Forest Preserve on September 14.
The underclass harriers totaled 15 points, the lowest possible score, compared to East Leyden's 52 and Niles East's 79. John Greco and Rich Boker, both running in their first meet, finished first and third, respectively. Lloyd Schlegel, a promising sophomore, placed second to Greco just one second ahead.
They finished in this order: Greco MW, 9:00; Schlegel MW, 9:01; Boker MW, 9:06; Boyce MW, 9:07; Kinder MW, 9:11.
On Tuesday the frosh‑soph captured their second victory with a perfect score over Barrington.
