Cagers Win Regional Crown

This year Maine West's varsity bucketmen captured the regional championship but lost the first game of the sectionals to Waukegan. This has been the farthest that a Maine West bucket squad has traveled in the state tourney. In previous years the cagers have never gone farther than the second game of the regional.

To qualify for the regional championship the Warriors overcame Deerfield and Arlington by scores of 75‑34 and 62‑53, respectively. In the title game, the bucketmen dumped the Knights of Prospect 46‑39. This was the second time West had beaten Prospect this year, both times by seven points. Prospect beat us once by only one point.

The Prospect game started as Wehlacz won the tip to give West the ball. DeKreek and Franzen hit on shots for a 4‑0 lead before one minute had elapsed. This was not to be an easy victory, as the Knights battled to take a 9‑8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

As in every game with Prospect this year, this was another close, low‑scoring game, not being decided until the final quarter.

At the end of the game when the victory was decided, Wehlacz, Waters, and DeKreek took down the nets as tourney trophies. Mr. Alvin Kulicke principal of Prospect, made the presentation of the Regional plaque to the Maine West team.

Sectional Game

In their first sectional game, Maine West was downed by Waukegan by the score of 43‑40. Al Waters scored 13 points to lead the Warrior scoring attack.

The game remained close throughout the first half as the Warriors scored four points in the final minute to take a 25‑22 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs of Waukegan battled to a 36‑all tie at the end of the third quarter to put the pressure on the cagers.

In the final quarter the Warriors scored only four points on two baskets by Barney Franzen. A basket by Waters with only eight seconds remaining tied the score at 42‑42, but Al was called for traveling and the Warriors' hopes vanished. Waukegan went on to win the sectional title but lost to Carver, 54‑41, in the super‑sectional.
