Debaters Take 2 at Prospect

The Warrior Frosh‑Soph Debate squad took second place at the Prospect Invitational Debate tournament on April 6, proving that they will be strong contenders for West next year. Maine West teams competed with seven other suburban schools.

Beside winning second place, the underclassmen won the three top‑speaker awards. These places were captured by Randall Dean '65, Cheryl Fradette '66, and Steve Karina '65. Following close behind was Drusilla Owen '66, who tied for fourth place with a Highland Park entry.

This marks the third time that Maine West debaters have won awards of excellence or superior. Prior to the Prospect event, Maine West won an award at North Chicago and Northern Illinois university.

Award Tea Announced

Mr. Eric Edstrom and Miss Harriet Johnson, co‑debate coaches, announced that the Debate Award tea, which officially ends the debate season, was held in the social room at Maine West, at 3:30 p.m. on May 9. At that time 13 members of the squad received debate emblems. Forensic certificates and distinctive National Forensic pins were awarded. Of the 13 who received awards, eight were awarded honor degrees in the National Forensic league for outstanding debate achievement.

The emblem winners are Mary Ann Gembicki '64, and Jacquelyn Piraino '64, on varsity. On the junior varsity squad are Phil Engle '65, John Grimes '65, Richard Leyerle '65, Dawn Piotter '65, Bob Reinhart '65, and Timothy Zijewski '64. The frosh‑soph winners are Randall, Cheryl, Stephen, and Drusilla (previously named) and James Thoma '65.
