Spring vacation 1963! A memorable time for several Maine West students, and especially for myself, who was one of those fortunate to fly to Mexico.
Acapulco's open market was fun.
Although smelling like a zoo, it depicts the way of life of most Mexicans. Bargaining, part of the fun of market buying, was very enjoyable. One always begins by asking the price. After a quotation, the buyer always names a price lower than the one quoted. Then the game is to go up slowly, making the seller come down. Each one thinks he got the better of the deal, and it is quite pleasing after making a purchase.
One of the highlights of my sightseeing was the Palace of Fine Arts and its Ballet Folklorico. The palace has a glass curtain depicting the volcanoes of Popocatepeti

and Ixtaccihuatl. When the lights go down, colored lights are played upon the blue sky, white-capped mountains, and green scenery as they would appear from dawn to dusk. Mexican folklore is presented through song and dance so that one can appreciate with full clearness, harmony, and color the most representative dances of the different provinces of Mexico.
University City, housing the University of Mexico, comprises a group of modern buildings which have acquired both national and international fame. The Central library has no windows and is most beautiful in mosaics of natural colored stones.
Taxco, the "City of Silver" is built on an old silver mine. It is interesting to note how houses are built up the sides of mountains in Mexico like a flight of stairs.
