District play for Maine West's diamondmen will begin May 13 and continue through the 15. The Warriors will enter competition with a strong team in hopes of a berth in the May 20 and 21 Regional tournament.
In last week's conference encounter, Coach Carsten's team split a double header with the Trojans from Niles West. In the first game, after three scoreless innings, two hits enabled the Trojans to creep ahead, 1‑0. This lead was short‑lived as the Westmen swamped Niles with six runs in their half of the fifth. Six hits, including three bunts, a hit batsman, several walks, and a wild pitch all played a part in West's offense.
Chip Allen got the credit for the 8‑2 win.
The second game was a pitcher's duel as both teams were limited to three hits. West took early leads of 1‑0 and 2‑1, but nevertheless the Trojans came back to tie it up in the bottom of the fifth. After another scoreless inning, rain delayed the game for a short period of time. When play was resumed, the Trojans sneaked in an unearned run across in the bottom of the seventh. Bob Pawlowski picked up the defeat for West when the final score read, 3‑2.

Split Again
April 27 saw the Warriors split another twin bill as they lost 4‑2 to East Leyden, but came back to win 7‑0 behind the one‑hit pitching of Pawlowski. Pawlowski allowed the only hit in the fifth, which was wiped out by a double play.
The Warriors edged Forest View 4‑3 behind the fine hurling of Ed Schwenke and Chip Allen, April 24. Baird hit a round tripper and Gabbert stole home to highlight the offense.
In previous games, the action was all Maine's as the varsity won its first six conference matches. Victories were earned by both superb pitching and clutch hitting.
Mound Corp Strong
Coach Carstens' evidence of a strong mound corp was shown many times this spring. Allen threw a no‑hitter against Glenbrook North. He also hurled a one‑hitter against Forest View, winning 3‑0 and 8‑1. Other games saw Ed Schwenke pitch a two‑hit, 9‑0 win over Deerfield and Pawlowski hurl an 9‑0 shutout over Deerfield.
