Warrior of the West

Unofficially tying the state 220‑yard record on May 2, with a time of 21 seconds, and beating the Maine West 100‑yard dash record on May 7 with a time of 10 seconds flat, were my most exciting experiences in my four years of high school track competition," exclaimed Leroy Schlegel.

Leroy has been on the track team four years and has lettered in both his junior and senior years. Besides excelling in the 220‑yard run, he also participates in the 100‑yard dash and the 880‑yard relay. During the winter he is out for indoor track and enters both the 50‑yard dash and the 440‑yard run.

When asked about this year's team, Leroy offered, "The team is filled with young talent, but it will take time for this talent to develop."

Leroy's younger brother Lloyd, a sophomore, is the first man on the varsity 880‑yard team and Leroy hopes his brother will keep the fine progress he has made thus far.

Aside from being on the track team, Leroy has been writing feature articles for the sport's page of the Westerner and the Des Plaines Journal. He plans to go to Wisconsin State college in River Falls, where he expects to major in journalism.

When asked what he liked most about his senior year, Leroy said bluntly, "Thinking about getting out!"
