Gustus, Top Student; Collister,
Schulatorian

This morning the class of 1963 was gathered together in the Maine West auditorium for its last assembly ‑known as the Seniors' Honor assembly.

Eighteen outstanding seniors were honored with departmental awards, which were kept unknown until this time. In the art department John Aegerter and Tom Prochaska received the honors. For business education the selection was Cheryl Karnatz and Gail Magnuson. In English, Susan Luebbers and John Toth got the award. Outstanding home economics student was Donna Wiese.

Industrial arts selected Edward Churney and James Kuttnauer as its top students. Kay Hauck and Lois Wright were recognized by the language arts. In mathematics, Stephen Priest and James Ramsey were outstanding. For the music department Charles Hawes became the nominee.

Boys' physical education gave the honors to James Reed Jr., while the girls' counterpart award was handed to Lynda Holm. Tom Geisler got the nomination from the science department and Susan MacHattie received the top honor from the social science department.

SCHOLASTIC LEADERS ANNOUNCED

Final grade averages revealed that Ingrid Gustus was valedictorian and John Collister, salutatorian. At the Commencement exercises, Thursday, June 6, in the Maine East field house, Ingrid will speak on "I Have But One Lamp" (Patrick Henry) and John will talk on "Creative Inquiry, the New Approach in Science."

NEW AWARD GIVEN

For the first time Himel awards for patriotism were presented. Mrs. Marguerite Stitt Church, former Congresswoman, gave these awards to Mark Bade, Carol Ann Barrett, William Davis Hall, Stephen Priest, and Lois Wright.

Other honors were presented to Alan Waters as Athlete of the Year. Mr. David Kennedy, "M" club sponsor, gave the award. Lynda Holm was the first girl to receive the newly founded GAA scholarship of $250. Francyne Piraino, double scholarship winner, was selected for the Tri‑S scholarship of $225 and one of the four Mothers' club awards of $250. Also awarded $250 from the Mothers' club were Angeline Golembiewski, Michael Robbins, and James Wallace. These presentations were made by Mrs. Ralph Riddell, president of the Maine West Mothers' club.

The Harvard book award was given to Craig Ehlen by Dr. Richard Burnstine, Harvard alumnus.

GOOD WILL AWARDS

From home room nominations and teachers' votes the good will selections were made. John Aegerter Carol Barrett, James Burgett, Ingrid Gustus, Dan Humay, Tom Prochaska, Pat Ritter, Karen Strom, Alan Waters, and Lois Wright were the honored finalists.

Mrs. H. F. Christopher, representative of the Park Ridge chapter of DAR, made formal presentations to Lois Wright and John Aegerter who had been nominated earlier in the year

Assisting in the graduating ceremonies are juniors Marjorie Beck, Janis Bocskay, Arline Boyer, Robert Browne, Jeff Clement, Craig Ehlen, Philip Hway, Barbara Kratochwill, Kenneth Miller, Daniel O'Connell, Jacquelyn Piraino, Jane Pressl Karen Rivard, Steven Ross, Janet Virostko, Nancy Wille, Jill Williams, and Donna Wolf.

The assembly ended with the Maine West pep song.
