Take Photo Finish
May 31 saw West advance in the 1963 state crown race by obtaining only two hits for another come from behind victory. The 2-1 decision over Rockford Boylan in the championship game of the Rockford Sectional tournament w a s sparked by both great defensive play and tight pitching. The contest was Maine's fourth onerun win in a row.
Dehlin started against Noffke and both pitchers hurled three scoreless innings. Rockford broke the ice, however, as they scored a run in the top of the fourth. The 1-0 lead was attained when Ryand doubled home Dison with two out. Boylan succeeded in loading the bases before left fielder Al Waters made a spectacular rolling catch of a short fly ball for the third out.
Maine tied the score in the fifth when Esposito scored from second base on a ground ball which went through the Rockford third baseman for an error. The winning run came in the sixth when Kraft led off with a double, moved to third on an infield out, and crossed the plate on Baird's single to left. Allen received credit for the win.
