National Newspaper week, October 15 to 21, is a week set aside by President John F. Kennedy as a symbol, in gratitude, of one of the country's most important freedoms. This newspaper has chosen to honor this week by special features. It is proud to present two articles on page 2 by the editors of the city's leading newspapers.
The American newspaper occupies a unique and unusual place in the world. Its freedom to print is guaranteed by the Constitution. It has always been considered an essential and useful instrument in the Americans' daily lives and cultures.
Basic Purpose‑To Serve
Its basic purpose has always been the same‑to give the most concise, interesting, and meaningful information to the everyday reader in the shortest amount of time.
The honest and comparably average newspaper tries to give the true meaning of events both past and present. In this way the good reader is always well informed. The newspaper has other important purposes, such as serving as a medium for advertising and entertainment, as the voice of the public, and as a presentation of facts which are quite important for this nation to be successful.

Undoubtedly, you will on occasion become disturbed and even perturbed with your daily or weekly newspaper, yet it can't please all of the people all of the time. If you realize it is a valuable item for intelligent daily living and is probably the most constructive and educational item in t h e average person's existence, you will learn to enjoy it much more.
In the United States where newspapers are free from government restriction, you are free to select the reading matter of your choice. You are privileged to have a voice of protests; one which has its own ideas and is not prejudiced about any particular cause except the one which the paper believes honest and beneficial for every person in the best possible way.
Standards Maintained
It is the newspaper's constant hope that the reading public will continue to trust the honesty and integrity of t h e papers. Without this, they have no value. They also make a constant and unchangeable effort to maintain the standards which made this country., more than all others, a nation of newspaper readers.
National Newspaper week, therefore, is not an occasion for newspapers to praise themselves but an occasion for the public to give praise for services well done. It is a time for newspapers over the land to rededicate themselves to the trust the public has placed in them.
