Care Drive Goal Set for $2,000

Student Council's latest and biggest project is a Care drive to make $2,000 to purchase equipment for a boys' school in Columbia, South America.

The boys range in age from 14 to 20. Columbia has no coeducational school. Only one or two of the 300 mothers of the boys can read or write, though about half of their fathers are literate.

The school has only three young woman teachers, a primitive kitchen for the boys' second meal, a library of 110 books, and yet plenty of enthusiasm for learning and getting an education.

Through Care, Maine could purchase any amount of things needed desperately by the school ‑ a woodworking shop, books for the library, and textbooks, of which there is a great shortage. The chances for the school's success, its very survival, may depend on the interest and understanding of Maine's student body.

Receiving 1,000 pesos (110 dollars) a semester as a budget, this school is one of a few schools like it in northern Columbia. Maine can help the school, or try to forget all about it.
