Thinclads Capture Fourth in All
Conference Meet

Tomorrow the thinclads will compete in the first annual State District meet to be held at Schiller Park woods to try to qualify for the state meet next week. As 21 schools are entered in the District meet, the harriers will be up against some rugged competition.

John Greco came through for the Warriors again by placing fifth out of 81 runners in the conference meet at Glenbard East, October 19. The thinclads placed fourth in the meet with a score of 128. West's seven entries finished as follows: John Greco 5, Bob Wagner 22, Mark Bade 26, Wayne Buskin 41, John Schneider 42, Jim Witkay 47, and Rog Halvorsen 61.

Maine's runners added another victory to its standings as they trounced East Leyden 21 to 40 on Tuesday, October 16. Since Greco was brought up to varsity, he has placed fifth or above. In the Leyden meet he came through first with a fast time of 9:40 on the two-mile course. The four thinclads following close behind were Scott Taylor 3, 9:46; Jim Witkay 4, 9:53; Bob Wagner 6, 10:00; and Mark Bade 7, 10:02.

The Warrior runners downed Deerfield Friday, October 12, by a score of 20‑42 on the Deerfield course. John Greco and Walt Weinert (state champion last year) ran neck and neck all along the course until they came to a bridge approximately one‑half mile from the finish line. Since one of John's track shoes caught and came completely off, he had to run the last half mile with one shoe. As a result Greco had to settle for second place, four seconds behind Weinert.

The cold and windy weather didn't stop the thinclads as they marked another day of victory, Tuesday, October 23, when they conquered West Leyden 19‑44 in a well‑earned meet. The first five Warriors to place were Greco 1, 11:00; Schneider 3, 11:14; Wagner 4, 11:20; Meyer 5, 11:21; and Bade 6, 11:23. With one more conference meet to go, the harriers' record thus far is four wins, one loss, and one tie. Their next conference meet is against Niles West on October 30. The Indians are a strong team, but the Warriors will be out to beat them.
