Quill and Scroll Elects Geertz President

Newly elected officers for Quill and Scroll society are Rick Geertz '63, president; Sujane Schreyer '63, vice‑president; and Mike Welter '63, secretary‑treasurer.

Quill and Scroll is the International Honorary society for high school journalists. Membership is a distinct honor and is reserved for those outstanding publications‑staff members who meet the basic requirements established by the society and its local chapters. Candidates for Quill and Scroll membership must have demonstrated to the satisfaction of their staff adviser, the board of publications, or the school principal that they merit the award through high scholarship, journalistic achievement, and service. Some of the members of this society are well‑known journalists.

Once a year in the spring the club has a banquet at which the new members are initiated.

No annual dues are collected. When a candidate applies for membership, he pays a basic membership‑initiation fee. The society then provides the candidate with an official gold pin and a one‑year subscription to the Quill and Scroll magazine.

GAA

Twenty GAA members are going to a playday, November 18, starting at 8 am. at Highland Park High School. Featured will be trampoline, swimming, and basketball.

Volleyball intramurals are starting on Tuesdays and Thursdays, under Pat Stein '63 in C wing gym. On Mondays and Fridays badminton is on the agenda under Pam Pagel '64. Gymnastics and modern dance fill Wednesday's bill.

The GAA Tennis Team finished the season with a 5‑2 record. The team is a member of the North Suburban Tennis League. A m o n g the defeated league members are Niles West, Niles East, Glenbrook, and Maine East. Undefeated Evanston was Maine's only loss in the league play. Two non‑league games were played; East Leyden and Oak Park with a win and a loss respectively.

This is the second year of play for the tennis team. Last year's record was 4‑3.

Math Club

"There are 100011 paid‑up members in the Math club as of now," commented Mr. David Paisley, one sponsor of the Math club.

Along with Mr. Paisley, Mr. Larew Collister is the other sponsor of the club. They are undecided as to whether the club should have officers. Refreshments, served at every meeting, are bought with the 50 cents semester dues paid by the members. The club meets twice a month on the odd Tuesdays. Meetings are held in R‑104. Although the sole purpose of the Math club is the enjoyment of mathematics by its members, the membership drive for the first semester has ended. It will resume next semester, and again membership will be open to everyone.

Plans for the future include a field trip on December 4, 1962, to Universal Oil products where they will see a 7070 computer. A "Hex" tournament, a game played with hexagons, is also on the agenda for Math club members. They also intend to have outside speakers at their meeting.

By the way, if you were wondering about the number of members being a mistake, it's not. 100011 is the way to write 35 in the base‑two number system.
