Foreign Exchange Student Okay'd by Student Council

Foreign Exchange Student

The student council has approved the idea of having a foreign exchange student for the school year '63‑64, and has set up a foreign exchange committee headed by Sandy Collins '63.

Arriving by boat or plane in the summer of '63, the student will stay with a local family until the following June. This family will be chosen by the American Field Service (AFS) in New York. The host family will show the student many sights and Maine West students may also help the student in this.

The student will receive an allowance of $14 per month. The rest of the expenses may be sought through donations from local organizations.

"A foreign exchange student will improve Maine West in many aspects and our school and community are ready to take on the responsibility of sponsoring an exchange student," concludes Sandy Collins, foreign exchange committee chairman.

V‑Show

"This year's V‑Show staff is very ambitious and plans to make the show a tremendous success," remarked Neshan Keshian '64, student director.

Work began last summer for the April 4, 5 and 6 production.

Choreographer Diane DeFranco '65, and assistant choreographers Linda Mahan '65, and Donna Wiese '63, chose the members of the dance chorus earlier this month.

Auditions for the show will begin after Christmas vacation. "Students should complete their acts as soon as possible, keeping in mind that 'America' is the theme," concludes Diane Clarke '64, producer.

The faculty staff includes Mr. Robert Kuite, music director; Mr. George Blanas, art director; Mr. Garth Boyer, faculty director; and Mr. George Hoffman, Student Council sponsor.

The student staff is composed of Neshan Keshian '64, student director; Diane Clarke '64, producer; Sandy Collins '63, coordinator; Nancy Lindemann '63, student art director; Keith Johnson '64, stage manager; Diane DeFranco '65, choreographer; Linda Mahan '65, and Donna Weise '63, assistant choreographers; Sue Winandy '63, and Carol Jensen '63, costume directors; and Chuck Hawes '63, student music director.

Maine East Frosh

Maine West is scheduled to receive about 500 eighth grade students from Park Ridge for their freshmen year beginning in September. This will eliminate double shifts at Maine East. Maine West has an enrollment of 2,561 and Maine East has an enrollment of 4,100. There are 207 more boys than girls attending Maine West now. Next year the enrollment at Maine West will be about 3,225. Providing that Maine South will be ready to open in September 1964, the Park Ridge students will be here only one year.

Nine Periods

There will be nine periods next year instead of eight. Periods 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9 will be 42 minutes long. There will still be 20 minute lunch periods; fourth through sixth periods will be 45 minutes long.

The boundaries have not been set for Maine South yet. Boundary lines for the three schools will be made on the basis of population trend studies. There will be new bus routes needed for Park Ridge students.
