Will I Know Christmas?

By Emil Corona '63

In  a land of "Chatty Cathies, neon signs, and plastic trees,
Where Santa Claus sneaks bourbon on his many "Coffee sprees,"
In cities where huge snow plows erase the whitened streets,
How can I know Christmas?

Does it take a pile of boxes, all done up in green and red?
Must I see a huge parade with Santa on his sled?
Need I check my bank account with thoughts filled just with dread?
Is this how I'll know Christmas?

Or will it be in the smiles of children, the carolers, and the spirit of giving,
That first simple Christmas day reliving,
With tradition, sentiment, and gay tree trimmings
That I'll know Christmas?
